Lee began his career as a technical architect at AT&T in 2003. While working at AT&T, Lee developed the aspect-oriented programming (AOP) framework dynaop, which was featured in Oracle Magazine. Lee’s work on dynaop helped inspire JavaServer Faces’s (JSF) migration away from AOP.

In 2004, Lee joined Google as a staff software engineer and helped develop the Android mobile operating system. Dorsey said that Lee’s death was a “senseless tragedy,” while San Francisco Mayor London Breed called it a “horrible tragedy.” Figma CEO Dylan Field, who met Lee in 2006, wrote that, “It’s so hard to believe he is gone.”
