Chief of Defence Staff

Chief of Defence Staff is a newly created post under Indian armed forces.

• It  aims  to enhance the quality of military advice to the political leadership.

• It was established on December 2019.

General Bipin Rawat was the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), who took office on 1 January 2020.

• On 15 December 2021, General Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter crash near Coonoor in the Nilgiris.

CDS General Bipin Rawat has been posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s second highest civilian honor.

• The CDS has two main functions, (1) coordination of tri-service and the (2) bureaucratic functions.

• The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) was created with the aim of improving coordination tri-service effectiveness and overall integration of the combat capabilities of the Indian armed forces.

• Indian armed forces consist of three professional uniformed services: the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force.

• A new depertment, which is known as Department of Military Affairs created within the Indian Ministry of Defence and it is headed by Headed by the Chief of Defence Staff,

• The DMA provides integration between the armed forces of the Union and the Ministry of Defence.

• The CDS worked as the chief military adviser to the Minister of Defence.
• All the short term planning of military matters like issues related to soldier, buying and acquiring of arms and ammunition will fall within the purview of the Department of Military Affairs which is headed by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
