List of Common Vitriols
List of Common Vitriols

What is meant by Vitriol ?

• A vitriol is the general name of some chemical compound comprising sulfates of certain metals – originally, iron or copper.

How a vitriol is detected by color?

• The most common method to identify a vitriol is color of the vitriol. The mineral substances present in the vitriol were distinguished by their color, such as green vitriol for hydrated iron(II) / Ferrous sulfate and blue vitriol for hydrated copper(II) sulfate.

Most Common Vitriol

There are four major vitriol such as
1. Green Vitriol
2. White Vitriol
3. Blue Vitriol
4. Oil of Vitriol

Frequenty Asked Questions of Vitriols

Question 1: What is the formula of blue vitriol?
Answer: CuSO4.5H2O. [Blue vitriol is hydrated Copper(II) Sulphate]

Question 2: Vitriol meaning?
Answer: Vitriol is a compound of sulfate of some metals, such as copper, iron, or zinc.

Question 3: What is the formula of ” White vitriol”?
Answer:ZnSO4• 7H2O (Zinc Sulfate)

Question 4: What is the formula of ” Green vitriol”?
Answer: FeSO4•7H2O [Ferrous Sulfate]

Question 5: Which acid is known as “oil of vitriol”?
Answer: Sulphuric Acid

Question 6: Which chemical compound is known as “Red vitriol”?
Answer:Cobalt Sulfate [CoSO4•7H2O]

Question 7: Chemical name of Green vitriol ?
Answer: Ferrous Sulfate [FeSO4•7H2O]

Question 8: Chemical name of “oil of vitriol”?
Answer: Sulphuric Acid

Question 9: On heating green vitriol, the gases evolved are?
Answer: Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and sulphur trioxide (SO3).

Question 10: What happens when green vitriol is heated?
Answer: On heating, ferrous sulphate crystals lose water and anhydrous ferrous sulphate (FeSO4) is formed. So their colour changes from light green to white. On further heating, anhydrous ferrous sulphate decomposes to form ferric oxide (Fe2O3), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and sulphur trioxide (SO3)

Question 11:What is the formula of oil of vitriol?
Answer: H2SO4 (Sulphuric Acid)

Question 12: Why does blue vitriol change to white on heating
Answer: Blue vitriol is hydrated (combine chemically with water molecules) Copper(II) Sulphate, meaning CuSO4.5H2O. When blue vitriol is heated, those water molecules (5H2O) escape out of the blue
vitriol crystal and what’s left is anhydrous (containing no water ) copper sulphate or simply CuSO4, and the colour of blue vitriol turns into white.
