What is Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)?

• For a country the foreign direct investment (FDI) is referred to an investment in a company by a company or an investor located outside the country.

• The FDI in the form of a controlling ownership in a business in one country by an entity based in another country.

• Here the investment may involve acquiring a source of materials, expanding a company’s footprint, or developing a multinational presence.

• Foreign direct investments (FDI) are substantial investments made by a company into a foreign concern.

FDI equity inflows to India Financial Year 2021

• India has attracted total FDI inflow of US$ 19.779 billion during the second quarter of 2021-22, i.e. July, 2021 to September, 2021 which is 29% lower as compared to the second quarter of 2020-21 (US$ 28.102 billion).

FDI equity inflow grew by 4% in the first six months of F.Y. 2021-22 (US$ 31.153 billion) compared to the year ago period (US$ 30.004 billion).

‘Computer Software and Hardware Industry’  has emerged as the top sector during the first six months of F.Y. 2021-22 with 22% share of the total FDI Equity inflow followed by Automobile Industry and Services Sector respectively.

Majority of FDI Equity inflow was reported in the state of Karnataka during the first six months of the current financial year (2021-22) followed by Maharashtra and Delhi.

• In the  first quarter of the current financial year India has attracted total FDI inflow of 22.525 billion US$. Combining both the first and second quarter of the current financial year India has attracted total FDI inflow of 42.304 billion US$.

• Always keep in mind that Total FDI Inflows calculating by adding Equity inflows, Re-invested earnings and other capital.
• India received total FDI equity inflows of US$ 31.15 billion during the first and second quarter of the financial year 2021-22, i.e. April, 2021 to September, 2021.

Note:

Mauritius became India’s third largest investor in FY21.
• But in cumulative FDI inflow ( from April 2000 to December 2020) Mauritius has been the largest contributor of FDI equity inflow into India for the last two decades.

•  Other leading investor countries in FY21 included the Netherlands, Japan , Germany, United Kingdom, UAE and Cayman Islands.
