Atreyapuram Pootharekulu, a sweet made of rice and jaggery from Andhra Pradesh, has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indications Registry (GIR).

▪ Putharekulu is a sweet made of a very thin layer of rice starch that is folded and filled with sugar, dried fruits, and nuts.

▪ The name “Putharekulu” means “coated sheet” in Telugu, with “poota” meaning “coating” and “reku” (plural “rekulu”) meaning “sheet.”

▪ To make Putharekulu, sweet makers use a variety of rice called MTU-3626, which is locally known as “Bondalu” and is grown extensively in the Konaseema region of Andhra Pradesh.

  • This achievement marks a historic feat as Uttarakhand becomes the first state in India to secure 18 GI tags in a single day.
