Joint Military Exercise is one of the most important topics that is asked in the General Awareness section of SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, SSC CPO, CDS, AFCAT, Airmen Group X & Y, Indian Navy SSR, RRB NTPC, and all other state-based exams.
Introduction
▪ Joint military exercises allow countries to demonstrate their military prowess by training their troops and displaying weapons.
▪ It is an important aspect of international relations, where countries engage in military diplomacy to demonstrate their power.
▪ India has participated in numerous joint military exercises with countries around the world including neighboring countries. These exercises are conducted at various locations and involve various branches of the military such as the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
▪ In addition to demonstrating strength and cohesion, joint military exercises enable military personnel to gain valuable information and learn new techniques applicable to a variety of real-world situations.
▪ This is an important topic that can be tested in the general awareness section of competitive exams like SSC, SSC CGL, WBCS, and IBPS PO, as well as in defense exams like NDA.
What is Joint Military Exercise?
▪ Joint Military Exercise can be seen as a form of involvement of the various military organs of different countries that involves participating in exercises to promote stronger relations and cooperation between countries.
▪ Such exercises may involve one or multiple countries, and serve as a showcase of a country’s military strength, while also conveying a message to other countries. This type of engagement is often referred to as Military Diplomacy.
▪ Joint Military Exercises can be classified into two types:
- Bilateral Exercises
- Multilateral Exercises
▪ Bilateral Exercises, as the name suggests, are military exercises that occur between two countries. An example of this would be the TARKASH Exercise conducted between India and USA.
▪ On the other hand, Multilateral Exercises involve the military forces of more than two countries. An example of such an exercise is the Naval Exercise Malabar, which took place in Yokosuka, Japan, and included the participation of Australia, Japan, the USA, and India.
Why Joint Military Exercises of India are Conducted
▪ Defense exercises serve several purposes, such as countering terrorism, low-intensity conflict operations, and counter-insurgency efforts.
▪ Military exercises are used to test the capabilities of armed forces without engaging in actual combat.
▪ These exercises also prepare armed forces for providing humanitarian relief during natural calamities or disasters.
▪ Additionally, military exercises foster improved cooperation and coordination among participating military forces for joint military operations.
