A Brief Introduction to the Number of States and Union Territories of India

▪ Currently It consists of 28 states and 8 union territories.

▪ Previously India has 29 states and 7 Union Territories.

▪ newly formed state- Telangana.
• Telangana was formed on 2 June 2014, the area was separated from the northwestern part of Andhra Pradesh.

▪ Newly formed Union Territories are – Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir.

▪ Until 2019, Ladakh was a region of the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir.

▪ In August 2019, the Parliament of India passed an act by which Ladakh became a union territory on 31 October 2019.

▪ Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu are union territories in western India.

▪ It was formed by the merger of the former union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

▪ The territory is made up of four separate geographical entities Dadra, Nagar Haveli, Daman, and the island of Diu.

▪ According to the constitution of India, the governor is the nominal executive authority (de jure executive) and the Chief Minister is the real executive authority (de facto executive).

▪ According to the Constitution of India, at the state level, the governor is de jure head, but de facto executive authority rests with the chief minister.

▪ The governor appoints the chief minister, whose council of ministers is collectively responsible to the assembly.

▪ The chief minister’s term is usually for a maximum of five years; there are no limits to the number of terms they can serve.

▪ Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah has been named as the next chief minister of Karnataka, with DK Shivakumar as his deputy.

▪ The two leaders have agreed to a rotational formula, with Siddaramaiah serving as CM for 2.5 years and Shivakumar taking over after that.

▪ The swearing-in ceremony will occur on Saturday, May 20, 2023.

▪ On December 11, 2022, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu (Indian National Congress) took oath as the 15th Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.

▪ Mukesh Agnihotri took oath as the Deputy CM of Himachal Pradesh.
