Why do we celebrate Republic Day?

▪ The term “Republic” means a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.

▪ The Republic Day is celebrated to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution, which grants Indian citizens the right to democratically elect their government. As such, it is observed as a national holiday throughout the country.

Republic day history

▪ On August 15, 1947, India gained independence from British rule and became a constitutional monarchy with King George VI as the head of state and Earl Mountbatten as the Governor-General.

▪ However, the country did not have a permanent constitution at that time, and its laws were based on the modified Government of India Act of 1935.

▪ On August 29, 1947, a resolution was passed to establish a Drafting Committee to create a permanent constitution, with Dr. B. R. Ambedkar as the chairman.

▪ A draft constitution was prepared by the committee and submitted to the Constituent Assembly on 4 November 1947.

▪ The Assembly met for 166 days in public sessions spanning 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days before adopting the Constitution.

▪ On January 24th, 1950, the 308 members of the Assembly signed copies of the document in both Hindi and English, after thorough discussion and some revisions.

▪ Two days later, which was on 26 January 1950, it came into effect throughout the whole nation.

▪ 26 January was chosen as the day to declare India a Sovereign Republic.

▪ The significance of 26 January is that on that day in 1929, the Indian National Congress made the famous Declaration of complete Independence (Poorna Swaraj) in opposition to British rule.

Republic Day Speech in English

Jai Hind!

As we gather to celebrate our Republic Day, I am reminded of the sacrifices and struggles of those who came before us. They fought tirelessly to secure our freedom and establish a government that truly represents the will of the people.

Today, we have the privilege of living in a democratic nation where every citizen has a voice and the right to participate in the political process. But with that privilege comes a responsibility to engage in the civic life of our country and work towards building a better future for all.

On this significant day, let us pledge to uphold the values of our Constitution and to protect and defend the rights of every individual. Let us also commit to working together, regardless of our differences, to address the challenges facing our nation and to build a more just and equitable society.

As we celebrate the 74th Republic Day of India, let us also pay our respects to the brave soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for the nation.

Jai Hind!
