Introduction
• The SAFF Championships or South Asian Football Federation Championship previously known as South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation Gold Cup and SAFF Gold Cup.
• It is the main international association football competition of the men’s national football teams governed by the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF).
• SAFF was formed in 1997 by founding Member Associations from Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and SriLanka
• Currently a total of 7 countries participate in the SAF Championship, they are Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
• The SAFF motto ‘Unity in Strength’ depicts the power and bond of these seven Member Associations.
• At present, Kazi Md. Salahuddin is the President of SAFF.
• The headquarters of SAFF located in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
• The SAFF Championship is held every two years.
• Afghanistan joined SAFF in 2005 and left the association in 2015 to become a founding member of Central Asian Football Association (CAFA).
• The South Asian Football Federation (SAF) Championship started in 1993 in Lahore.
South Asian Football Federation (SAF) Championship 2021
• The 2021 edition of the tournament is the 13th edition of the SAFF Championship.
• The SAFF Championships 2021 was hosted by Maldives. Previously it was decided to be hosted by Pakistan.
• The National Football Stadium in capital Malé will host all the matches.
• India defeats Nepal 3-0 to lift the SAFF Championship title.
• As the most successful team, India has won the championship a total of 8 times incuding the 2021 tournament.
• This is the Indian football team’s first title triumph under head coach Igor Stimac.
