❒ Introduction

▶  Copa America is the main men’s football tournament contested among national  teams from South America.
 
▶ The event began in 1916 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Argentina’s  independence.

▶ The first final match (1916) was held between – Argentina and Uruguay. 

▶ The first inaugural title won by Uruguay.

▶ This is the oldest and third largest international football competition in the 
world.

▶  The competition determines the champions of South America.

▶  Till 1975 Copa America known as  the South American Football Championship.

Confederation.

▶ CONMEBOL is the continental governing body of football in South America.

▶ Also, it is one of FIFA’s six continental confederations and the oldest continental

▶ Its headquarters is located in Luque, Paraguay, near Asuncion.

▶ CONMEBOL is responsible for the organization and governance of South 
American football’s major international tournaments.

❒ Copa America Number of Team  

▶ Prior to 1993, the tournament was held in the 10 member countries of 
CONMEBOL.


▶ Since 1993, CONMEBOL has started to invite national teams from outside South 
America to participate in the Copa America. 

▶  The first two participated team outside South America were the United States  and Mexico.

▶ Mexico participated in every tournament between 1993 and 2016.
▶ In 2016, Copa America Centenario had an exceptional total of six guest teams. 
▶ The six guest teams were Costa Rica, the United States (host), Haiti, Jamaica, 
Mexico and Panama.

▶ Argentina, which hosted the inaugural edition in 1916, has hosted the tournament the most times (nine).

▶ Mane Garrincha stadium in Brasília hosted the opening match. 
▶ The Final match was held at the Maracane stadium (Rio de Janeiro).
▶ Argentina won their fifteenth title by defeating Brazil, 1–0 in the final. 
▶ It was Argentina’s first senior title since 1993.
▶ Angel Di Maria scored the only goal of the match in the 22nd minute.
▶ The Next Copa America match will be held in 2024. 
▶ The 2024 Copa America is expected to be hosted by Ecuador
