Carlos Alcaraz downs Novak Djokovic in a three- set thriller to reach Madrid final.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic lost to young sensation Carlos Alcaraz in three sets in the semifinals of the Madrid Open.

Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz battled for over three hours in an exciting semi-final showdown at the Madrid Open.

Novak Djokovic was close to victory in the second set, but ended up losing 6-7(5), 7-5, 7-6(5).

Novak Djokovic took to Instagram after the match to praise the young man and wish him well in the final.

Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest player to defeat a world number one in 17 years.

Despite the loss, Djokovic said he leaves Madrid feeling good about his preparations for the upcoming French Open, where he will defend his title.

The Madrid Open was only his fourth tournament of the year, and third on clay. 

Novak Djokovic lost to 29th-ranked Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his first match in Monte Carlo Masters.
