India’s first underwater metro tunnel will be fully functional by 2023.
The construction of the country's first underwater tunnel
has started in
Kolkata, West Bengal.
It will provide metro connectivity from Kolkata to Howrah by 2023.
Construction of the tunnel under the Hooghly River is underway and will be fully operational by 2023.
The metro tunnel corridor is built 33 meters below the riverbed.
According to an ANI report, Of the 16.6-km-long east-west stretch, 520 metres will be under the river bed of Hooghly river.
The Kolkata East-West Metro line is being constructed by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRCL).
Almost 80 percent of the work of the East-west Howrah Metro station is completed.
The upcoming underwater tunnel will provide a unique travelling experience for passengers.
