A black hole, a strange object in space, scattered across the Milky Way galaxy.
The gravitational fields of black holes are so powerful that nothing can stop them from scattering Mao - not even light.
Now astronomers have discovered something about these cosmic mysteries that has improved our understanding of them.
An international team of astrophysicists found that black holes can flip the direction of their magnetic fields.
This spontaneous change can be observed when a black hole in a galaxy 236 million light-years away suddenly becomes 100 times brighter.
This discovery could mean that black holes have a much more dynamic nature than previously thought.
In late 2017, astronomers noticed a specific black hole, dubbed 1ES 1927+654.
The black hole 1ES 1927 + 654 has become super bright, emitting more X-ray radiation as well as visible light and much more ultraviolet light.
“Normally, in case of a black hole if the ultraviolet rises, the X-rays will also rise,” said by Nicolas Scepi.
"But here, the ultraviolet rose, while the X-ray decreased by a lot. That’s very unusual.”.. said by Nicolas Scepi.
Nicolas Scepi is the co-author of the new study, and a postdoctoral researcher at JILA.
The 'JILA' is a joint research institute between the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
“Rapid changes in visible and ultraviolet light have been seen in a few dozen galaxies similar to this one,” said by Sibasish Laha.
Sibasish Laha is a research scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
All of these observations make researchers realize something unique in the cosmic world that a black hole has reversed its magnetic field.
