Alejandro Davidovich Fokina defeated World No. 1 Men's tennis player Novak Djokovic on his opening match at the Monte CarloMasters.

Novak Djokovic had been forced to miss the Australian Open and many of the ATP Tour's biggest tournaments this year due to his Covid-19 vaccination status.

He was deported ahead of the Australian Open due to being unvaccinated against Covid-19.

Novak Djokovic, a two-time champion at Monte Carlo, lost to the 22- year-old Spaniard in three sets, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1.

The Monte-Carlo Masters is an annual tennis tournament for male professional players held in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France.

The event is part of the ATP Tour Masters 1000 on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour.

The tournament is played on clay courts and is held every year in the April–May period.

The Monte Carlo tennis championship was first held in 1897. It became an "Open" event in 1969. 

In 1990 the Monte Carlo  became an ATP Championship Series Single Week tennis event.

Rafael Nadal is the only player to win eight consecutive Monte Carlo Masters titles at the same tournament.
