The festival is celebrated by lighting a candelabrum candle with nine branches, commonly called a menorah for hanukkiah.

A branch is usually placed above or below the others and its candle is used to light eight other candles. This unique candle is called the shammash.

Each night, an additional candle is lit by the shammash until all eight candles are lit together on the last night of the festival.
This year (2022) the festival will start on December 18 (Sunday) and end on December 26 (Monday) evening.
Hanukkah has gained major cultural importance in North America and elsewhere, especially among secular Jews.
